Lending a hand to others with a commitment to service work, especially projects focused on social justice, is a long-standing part of the mission of St. Agnes Academy. Since the school's earliest days, students collected newspapers and donated food, volunteered at hospitals and soup kitchens, worked with children, seniors and immigrants, or raised money for disaster relief. Today, as alumnae, the tradition of service continues with the SAA Alumnae Association. Annually, the association sponsors an Alumnae Service Day to connect graduates to meaningful community work. In 2010, the group spent a day working at the Houston Food Bank in April. Thirty-five alumnae, accompanied by family and friends, joined association board members and St. Agnes staff to prepare food bags for needy Houston residents."Service is something that is a lifelong commitment," Amanda Zientek Schluens '01 said. "St. Agnes instills that in us and we carry it throughout our lives. Our Annual Service Day gives us an opportunity to come together as alumnae to work together and toward something we care about."
We hope you will consider volunteering your time and talents to reconnect to the school and other alumnae. Here are a few of the opportunities available.
All Soul's Day: Help set up and serve at the reception following the All Soul's Mass. This reception is open to the families of alumnae who have passed away this year.
Service Project: The Alumnae Association Board has voted for the Houston Food Bank for our spring service project. We need help with the planning process and volunteers.
Class Agent: To facilitate communication between St. Agnes and its alumnae community; to reconnect classmates; to serve as a conduit for Alumnae news and class updates and to promote participation in St. Agnes events and activities.
Event Hostess: Want to host an alumnae gathering in your home or business? We travel to several cities throughout the year. Your insight into your community will help us throw a fabulous alumnae event and we'll handle all the details!
